Protecting What is Precious
Regarding the work that went into preparing for work on the Wisconsin State Capitol while working for J.P.Cullen
The marble walls. The vaulted ceilings. Pillars made of stone.
A wond’rous piece of work, my friend. Why just the floor alone.
The hardware fittings. Lamps and fixtures. Woodwork, benches, rails.
All must be protected from our hammers, saws and nails.
So we take utmost precaution for the work to soon take place.
We engineer a safety plan, to cover crucial space.
We bang some heads together ‘til we cover all our bases.
And this is what we do inside, to cover all those spaces.
We start by spreading Visqueen on the awesome marble floor.
Fesco board for padding. An array of one-by-four.
Topped with five-eighths plywood, cut to fit each corner snug.
Laid carefully throughout the floor. A giant wooden rug.
Coated with retardent, should a fire, somehow start.
All hauled in by laborers, aboard this tiny cart.
Likewise all debris is hauled, maintaining neat and clean.
Working in the public eye. Always being seen.
Walls were built around the pillars. Statues sealed in tight.
Walls to fill the giant archways, sixty feet in height.
Walls around existing walls. Meant for their protection.
Preparing for the scaffold and the crew, for its erection.
Ground floor being finished, took the project up to one.
Again the same long process till another floor was done.
Working off the scaffold as our walls gain elevation.
Sealing the rotunda for its current restoration.
Protecting what is precious, the rotunda in its wonder.
Protecting all around the mural. Everything down under.
One awesome, major project that prepares of for the next.
In giving this great Capital, its overdue respects.
