Your Bond Will Go Unbroken
Gay Carlson (poem for his two brothers Gus & Guy)
When I think of the bond between Gay, Gus and Guy.
The pain is too deep and too real.
It tears thru my heart ‘til I break down and cry.
So sad is the way that I feel.
I think of them little, when I had first met them.
Three little Indians were they.
After all of these years I did, still, not forget them.
These boys with names Gus, Guy and Gay.
Many years had passed, since I’d seen these young men.
Thru Sarah I had got to know Gay.
When I think that we never will see him again.
I choke on what words should I say.
To ease this tight fam’ly, to shoulder their burden.
To give them some comfort for now.
To help them, in some way, reduce all this hurtin’.
To deal with this problem somehow.
Let me just say how darn lucky you are.
How rich that your life has been blessed.
Gay left you a beautiful, meaningful scar.
Your brother was one of the best.
You guys knew him best and you cherished him dearly.
He left you with, not, one regret.
He cherished you likewise, we’d seen that quite clearly.
He’s someone you’ll never forget.
He always will live in you. Please don’t forget that.
His spirit has joined with you now.
Though his flesh is away, you must try, not, to fret that.
But find strength in his passing, somehow.
You guys were tight knit. You had found the same heart.
Together was how you were meant.
And nothing will pull you comletely apart.
You guys had a bond like cement.
You just keep on going the way way you been going.
You know that’s what Gay would have told you.
His quirks and his charms, just let them keep showing.
That’s a promise to which he will hold you.
Keep him alive! Tell stories about him.
With passion, tell tales of your past.
Wherever you go, don’t go there without him.
Just don’t let this dance be his last.
It isn’t the end of the three musketeers,
just because one’s been chosen to go.
How would Larry and Curly have dealt with their fears,
if they had to get by without Moe.
Latch onto the strength you have gained from your brother.
You will soar with the eagles, I swear.
And the strength, you will find, you have gained from each other,
will take you where most never dare.
And a lot of folks love you, it’s true Gus and Guy.
Our offer to help is extended.
We’re just one more strength, on which to rely.
We will help you to get those hearts mended.
One final source, where I hope you will drink.
Is God in his wisdom and power.
The moment you feel you’re beginning to shrink,
He will put the bloom back in your flower.
I wish you the best. Hope your futures are bright.
Be glad that you left no regret.
As brothers you guys were bound pretty darn tight.
You guys are as good as they get.
It’s surely not easy, but you will get thru this.
Everyone here is behind you.
And just when you think, there’s no way I can do this.
God’s hand will assuredly find you.
