Take Time to Smell the Roses
I wrote this for a home builder I interviewed with and he asked me if I could write him a poem for a workaholic. I am not sure if this is what he wanted or not but I gave it a shot. I thought of my dad while writing it.
Working fifteen hours a day!
Success, it seems, you’ve paved its way.
Your reputation’s good and sound.
Always breaking newer ground!
Houses built so nice and fast.
A reputation meant to last.
Working week-ends, bet you do!
That’s what I see when I see you.
Worries here and troubles there!
Sometimes gasping just for air!
In the office, on the phone!
Sometimes late and all alone!
Addicted to the work you love.
Lots of push and lots of shove!
Deadlines that you have to meet!
Seeing jobs are done complete.
You should be proud of who you are.
Be careful though, don’t go too far.
Grindstone burning all your noses!
Don’t forget to smell the roses.
Cause life can pass you by so fast.
Be sure you don’t regret your past.
Remember those three heart attacks.
Tracer, friend, please face the facts.
You are a work-a-holic man.
Although I do respect your plan!
Do not neglect the ones you love.
If work is all you’re thinking of.
Good intentions, I can tell.
You do your job and do it well.
And though you’ll never die of hunger;
You aren’t getting any younger.
My wish for you is happiness.
Combined with love and true success!
I’m glad we got the chance to chat.
I see now where it is you’re at.
I hope this poem inspires you.
To take a week or maybe two!
And spend it with your family.
I think we all need time that’s free.
Not sure if this was your request.
Fifteen minutes of my best.
It was a pleasure meeting you.
We’ll meet again! I hope we do!
Sincerely,
Steve Ackerman
